I hope the father can find some perspective. He did what he had to do, especially given that the son apparently pressed the attack when his dad confronted him. My first thought was a line from Firefly: "No, son. You murdered yourself. I just carried the bullet a while."

As a father I can't imagine, I expect my son to make some mistakes, but pray they are not fatal ones like this. I hope the father can go on knowing he did what he had to. This just makes me sick

Agree that it is sad... but apparenlty when confronted by his armed father, the kid was in the process of attacking him with a weapon. [Wish the news had reported what it was.] You have to think the kid may have been willing to seriously injure or kill both his aunt and his father. If he wasn't intending to rape and / or kill his aunt.. only planning on a robbery... wouldn't he have just played it safe and waited until he knew she wasn't at home? Also, if he didn't intend to seriously injure or kill his father, wouldn't he have just said something like, "Dad, its me [his name] don't shoot!"

When I was growing up, there was many a time I heard fathers [with sons who turned out bad] say that they had brought the little s*** into this world and would take him out if they had too. And back then they meant it. I remember a number of news stories about parents turning in their children for crimes they had commited... sometimes at gun point.
