Haha. Yeah, it’s also called a breezeway. I was listening to an audiobook and heard it pronounced for the first time. I thought that was cool and I finally was able to use it in a conversation.

I’ve had people, driving personal vehicles, show up at my place to deliver something I bought. Yesterday I was doing some wood work in my porte-cochère and Sam’s delivered a couple cases of oil I bought online the day before.

There was a sticker on the box that said thank you for supporting my small business. The delivery lady was driving a Nissan Rogue.

How do these delivery folks make any money? Am I supposed to tip them?

About 2 years ago a late model Camry came thru the gate and traveled the 200 yard gravel pot holed driveway. The wife, I and the dog were outside working the garden. I was sporting my usual 20 year old beat up hat and the dog and I met the car. Down came the tinted window ,inside was a city girl who said Amazon delivery. I politely recieved the package and said thank you. She was off like a storm, I dont recall the tee shirt of the day but it seemed like she didn't care much for the setting.

I just happened to see that word for the first time yesterday in a Jack Reacher book. Had to look it up.

The Hampton Inn in Starkville, MS, has a porte-cochere. I know this because they started working on it while I was staying there a few years ago, and they put up signs stating that the porte-cochere was closed for construction.

I'd heard and read the term before (IIRC, it was a big Ante-Bellum Southern thing), but it wasn't 'til then that I learned what it actually was.

I had a delivery with a personal vehicle about 6 months ago. I was expecting Fedex, or UPS, or something else. Asked the lady about that and she advised that she was part of Uber delivery. Never heard of it, up until then.
The kids next door are continuously getting food delivered, with the delivery in personal vehicles. There must be a market for it somehow.

Tractor supply has rewards for their good neighbor program. 2 same day deliveries each quarter if you meet their requirements.
I have had items delivered the same day but the last time they didn't deliver. I called them up and they said to wait a few days and see if it gets delivered.

That prompted me to ring up their main headquarters. Got a $25 gift certificate out of it. I'm so far away I imagine I'll be calling again the next time I use my same day reward.

Having said that, I've worked for many folks that thought they had money to spend if they called the bank and there was money in the account.

Sounds like my ex except for the work part.

In my business you absolutely know you are going to run out of work at some point so you better leave some in the bank. I don't have many expenses these days as I work from home 99.999% of the time. When I first got in this business I drove 68k miles in a year. Paid for my car and then some. Hotels and meals...Can't say I miss that part much but the mileage can be a money maker if your smart about it. Current rate for 2023 is $0.655.

There's big money in it. DoorDash, GrubHub, Instacart, and the like saw their business boom during the Rona times, and they got people used to the idea of getting pretty much anything delivered (it's not just pizza for college kids pulling an all-nighter anymore). The Walmarts and Sam's have gotten into it, too, though I don't know if they're sending out employees or contracting through one of the other services. Amazon is contracting out a lot, if not most, of their delivery.

Heck, we don't have any Krogers, but we have Kroger Delivery. As best I can tell, they have a logistics center in OKC, but I've seen their delivery vans as far south as Lexington.

As for tipping, I don't know about Sam's, but most of the delivery services have a place for you to put in a tip when you're checking out. When I order stuff delivered (except for places like Amazon), I do include a tip for the driver.

The one that gets me is apps asking if I want to add a tip when I'm ordering take-out. Umm, I'm providing the service on that deal, so why would I leave a tip for my work?
