It all has to do with the way he folds it... I thought it was random at first, but he actually knows how to fold it all so that it comes out looking exactly like he wants it too.

Next time he is forging, I'll try to take some video and post it on YouTube. He lives way out in the sticks though, so I don't go there much.

Interesting...

I wonder how that impacts the strength of the blade? there's got to be stresses in the crystalline structure of the steel where the colors change one would think.

Well, he would be the guy to ask. But the two different colors are actually two different types of metal.

After he forges it, he hardens the steel himself.
