BB...go look at http://www.agrussell.com I wasn't a knife person either until I bought my SOG. It's slicker than glass and uber-sharp, even though I "abuse" it :selfangel

Some of their knives are like works of art. I swear it's like looking in the jewelry store, I always fall in love with the most expensive one. Of course I'm a sucker for fancy grips...I had that problem with our 1911 too

Oh my ... I have actually been kinda looking for a new pocket knife. The one I bought to use at the range was cheap (but it did the trick) and is duller than a piece of firewood now. *off to check out the SOGs*

I do like knives, but only ones that are intended for use. Have you seen the ones that cost like $1500 and some are even more that that. I did start a thread looking for a good new pocket folding knife, I was looking for new ones that I have not seen yet. I use my pocket knife for everything, I abuse them and break them, one day I might clean a deer and the next day use it to cut my steak. So I typically don't spend more that about $75 on one.

Oh and BB, you should post that fancy knife in the classifieds here, and use they money to buy you a new gun or ammo, something you actually use

You know, that is not a bad idea but I have no idea what it is worth, although I would be willing to part with it for what I have in it. Guess I better go find the receipt.

Other than being handmade, the difference is the metal used.

My Gerber knives, while nice, will dull quickly, as the metal is relatively soft.

On the super high end, like $500-$1000+, it is that the knife is a handmade work of art, with super high end materials (for the handle and blade). Like the $10k-$20k shotguns.

I'd like to have a nice knife someday. Mind you, not $1000 knife, but one of the quality semi-customs like Busse, Coye, Dozier etc.

That's what I am thinking ... I want something I can use and will not go dull the second time I yank it out but I don't want it to cost a fortune either.

A knife is a tool. So depending on your use of that tool, you will have different ideas of what that tool should be, and what it should do. When you have a passion for a item, just like you know your own gun inside and out, you'll know what is good, and what is not so good. You wouldn't carry a 8" 454 casull (at least I don't think you would) in your purse for protection. And you wouldn't take a compact 9mm grizzly bear hunting, as your primary weapon. Knives are the same.

Ahhh I see ... funny you should mention the casull. I was at H&H yesterday with a girl who have only shot a gun one time before in her life. We got to talking to the guy at the counter (you know, the one with the pink gun! LOL) and she was asking about the "bear guns". I had forgotten how heavy that thing was ... Makes my full size .45 feel like a airweight!

Also ... how do you "take care" of a knife?? Is there a special way to clean it like with guns and ... ok, this is gonna sound stupid, but I really don't know ... how do you sharpen them if they go dull? Can you use a stone with all knives or is it different for different kinds of metal?

What about the knife thing? Why people collect them or why they carry them?

I like a good fixed blade along the mid line of my body that I can access in a clinch. It's a backup to my firearms and in close contact grappling situations is faster access than a firearm.

I also enjoy collectible knives I got to spend a week with Jim Hrisoulas several years ago watching him work pattern welded steel, he was finishing a sword for the Shah of Oman that he had been commissioned to do I got to fondle it and do some hand polishing on the blade, I also watched him demo a spear with a Japanese style laminated head that effortlessly sliced 1/2 way through an oak 2x2 like it was made of butter.

The knife thing is a typical male apppreciation for beauty, form and function. Just like a good woman, when a man applies the correct technique in handling and use, a good blade will respond by doing wonderous things that both delight and amaze the senses. Any blade with the proper mettle will do this if properly maintained. If it happens to be beautiful (just like a woman) or have unique features, all the better.

However, unlike a woman, your favorite blade doesn't show envy when you eye another man's blade, nor jealousy when you bring a new one home to the stable. :D

You have been hanging around the wrong women ... :yikes2::oops3::sorry1::bolt:

I tell GC all the time he can have all the girlfriends he wants ... :ooh2:

Ahhh but truth be told the old green-eyed monster has reared its ugly head here a time or two when certain women have batted their eyes at him. Seems I am a bit more territorial than I previously thought! :oops3::werd:

There is a REALLY good, reasonable blade-sharpener east of Tuttle, on Hwy 37. His name is Jerry Broughton and his phone is 381-3258. He does everything from lawn equipment to hand tools and circular saw blades to knives and scissors. I think David even had him sharpen a chainsaw blade once.

I like sharp pointy things...

BB I don't quite "get" the $400-$1000 knives either though. I'm with redneck on this one, it a tool I use (and abuse) daily. I carry a 10+ year old Benchmade (ats-34 steel, about $150 10 years ago) and it still holds a crazy sharp edge. My brother carries a ~$35 Gerber and I can't get the same edge on his that I can on mine. I understand that the steel used makes a giant difference...but I still don't get the obsession with the super high end blades. Someone please edumacate me...

I am pretty sure I paid all of $25 for the knife I carrned at work. I may need one of those Benchmades. That seems reasonable.

For a factory blade, Benchmade is tough to beat and definitely my favorite. I have several and all of them work very well. If you look into them, may I suggest you go with one that has the Axis lock? They have them in regular, assisted opening and autos. Definitely one of the strongest locking mechanisms available.
