Subsonic Ammo Turning Supersonic

OKay, it looks like I'm going to be building a 300 Blackout pistol. I sold my AR in 300 Blackout cause it had a 16" barrel and was difficult to suppress (the subs weren't staying subs). It was the first AR-15 that I built, and I didn't really know any better cause I was still learning. I had some fun with it, and now it's gone.

If you guys have time, I would greatly appreciate some recommendations for a 10.5" 300 Blk barrel that won't break my bank. I don't need a sub-MOA barrel, here. Right now, I'm looking at Bear Creek Arsenal's 300 Blackout barrels. I've bought from them several times, and I've had good success with their stuff. I know it's not "Wilson Combat" or a "top shelf" barrel, but it suits my needs....and the 10.5" barrel with Bear Creek is just shy of $100, which is kinda perfect. Here is the barrel I'm looking at buying. I'd prefer a 1:7 twist.

Any thoughts?

The one thing I have found against my PSA 8.5" is the weight. I've grown fond of lighter guns, so I prefer light barrels.

I suggest researching the actual barrel brand you buy carefully. Port size is critical to 300 BLK functioning correctly across all the various loads. 300blktalk forum is a very good info source. I would rather pay a few $$ more for something confirmed to work to begin with.

I'm running 9, 12.5, and 16", so I don't have any real experience with 10.5" in that caliber.

Curious if you are running a switch gas block to shut the gas off to quieten it further.

If you are looking for something that is easy to keep subsonic for raccoons you can keep a SBR in 9mm, 40SW, or .45ACP subsonic easily. The right loads don't even go supersonic while still in the barrel. Pistol caliber suppressors are a lot cheaper too. If you are looking to just have fun with a build the .300blk is a good choice. Can be expensive tho.

Yes, I will be running an adjustable gas block. I run them on all my AR's, regardless of build. At some point, I almost always end up putting a can on the end of my guns.

WOW! $160 for that Faxon barrel? I almost always go stainless or melonite, but I nearly always get a heavy barrel. I don't have any gov. profile barrels on any gun that I own, so this would be a first. But, if the weight savings is noticeable, especially after I put another 14 ounces on the end of the gun, perhaps I should rethink old habits and do something different. Thanks for the link — that one is definitely in the running.

Well, the main reason I'm going with 300 Blackout is because I have so many extra AR parts and all I need is a barrel. I have a side-charging upper from Bear Creek Arsenal that I want to use for this pistol. I highly recommend these side-charging uppers! I have one of these on my DMR — you can shut the gas off, shoot it suppressed, and reach up and cycle it manually just like a bolt gun for a near completely silent shooting experience!). Shooting like this, me and my buddies have put down 3 or 4 hogs before the rest of the herd decided to make a break for it. My girlfriend says we are cheating when we do that hahaha

I'd love to have a 9mm AR for no other reason than the ammo being more affordable. I also plan on having all of my needed reloading equipment before December 31st, so I'm not that far away from being able to reload my own stuff, including 300 Blackout subs. I've been saving brass for two years, so I got that part covered.

Rest assured I will annihilate some raccoons with this gun.

Man I believe that is the same exact barrel I have on my blackout. The important thing is that it has a .125 gas hole. Get an adjustable gas block to go with it. Not absolutely necessary but for $35 at Joe Bobs it is nice to be able to turn the gas down for supers. I have less than 10 rounds down mine so far, which is way lower than normal, and I only shot one 3 round group with it but it was around 3/4 inch or less. Its already accounted for several pigs though.

TCG- what about a compound bow or crossbow? Lot easier to keep quiet, but 70 yards can be a fairly long shot, not that there aren't those that can't make it routinely, but it ain't the norm.

Okay, so a friend of mine asked me to help him with his form-1 can, so I agreed. I talked him into using the exact same parts that I used to build mine, because I wanted to try a different baffle spacing configuration on the first 4 baffles. I increased the spacing between cones 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4 and made the spacing between cones 4-5 and 5-6 shorter, and then opened up the last spacer between the last baffle and end cap, and it fixed the problem. We compared his can against mine because they are exactly the same, and on his can, every subsonic round we put through his can stayed subsonic. I believe it is because of the additional spacing between the first few cones, and it allowed for more gas expansion closer to the muzzle. It also eliminated nearly all of the blowback from the can...I'm sure there was some, but neither of us could tell if there was any, which was a nice change. His can was a lot quieter, and was comfortable to the shooter's ear on .223 supers all the way up to .308 supers, which is what it was built for (.30 caliber can, meant for .223/5.56, 300 Blackout, and 308WIN).

I guess I'm just going to make my form-1 can a dedicated 223/5.56 can and when my next round of stamps come in, I'm going to duplicate my friend's configuration and build one just like his.
