I know when you sell a car now that you are supposed to remove your tag as it is registered to you and not the car. My question is, if you buy a used car, can you put the tag on it or do you have to buy another tag?

You keep your tag for your next vehicle.

Stupid law and I recently heard they are creating new legislation to try and change it back to the tag stays with the car because some people are driving around without tags for a while.

Speaking as someone who twice got phone calls from the cops at 3am asking me if I still owned a car that I had traded in at large factory dealerships months earlier, I'm not at all in favor of them changing that law back.

All you have to do to eliminate that problem is tear off the small part at the bottom of the title that lets you document that the vehicle is no longer yours and take it to the tag office to get filed.

This^^^^^^^^^^

I had traded one in at dealership, 6 months later, it was still registered in my name and had been in a hit a run. I had all of the paperwork showing the trade in, with the new purchase. Received several calls from insurance companies, lawyers, DA, and the freaking dealership where we ha traded, but NEVER again

That's great, except my titles are old enough that they don't have that tear-off piece. Hell, a couple of them are old enough that they aren't even green...
