I'm never reading the news ever again. I have already stopped watching the national news. You have some news sources reporting Obama not allowing time for troops to vote and now you have this garbage. I understand it's a reader's response but come on! Don't publish this garbage. [h=1]Voter ID laws aim to suppress Democratic turnout[/h]http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/opinion/readersrespond/bs-ed-voter-id-20120807,0,4092096.story

Voter fraud is not a problem in our country. For years, the emphasis has been on increasing voter participation so that those who get elected are truly representative of the people. Now, in an effort to defeat President Barack Obama in November, the Republican Party is doing everything possible to suppress the vote among young people, minorities and the poor, who all tend to vote Democratic.
The new voter law in Pennsylvania requires everyone to have a state voter card. No longer is one's driver's license or Social Security card considered valid identification, even though those are satisfactory for most other transactions. Many people who have voted all their life may be disqualified.
With no proof of voter fraud in any significant numbers, Republicans boast that the new system will enable them to win Pennsylvania. Since the beginning of his term, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has stated that the primary goal is to deny Mr. Obama a second term.
I thought the economy, jobs and health care were the primary issues of these last three and a half years. Rather than debate the issues and encourage maximum voter participation, it comes down to voter suppression in order to win. How cynical can you get? Is this really the American way?

Voter ID laws do not prevent anyone from voting except those who either refuse to follow the law or are ineligible under the law. All of the other arguments are fantasy and grossly exaggerated "worst-case scenarios".

I have to show both my voter registration card (free to obtain) and driver's license or other government ID (passport, state issued non-driver ID card - free to indigent or nominal cost to others, military ID) and the list is fairly expansive.

I truly do not see the issue unless one posits that there are a significant number of voters who do not possess and will refuse to get any qualifying ID but will make the effort to vote. Is the registration process itself a problem too then? Why not just put ballot boxes on every corner on election day and just pick them up at the end of the day? After all no one will cheat - it isn't a problem.

From your own link:

A series of laws passed in the past year by Ohio’s Republican state legislature and Gov. John Kasich have waived the last three days of in-person early voting before Election Day for all but members of the military. Civilians now have until Friday, Nov. 2,to cast those ballots and must arrive at the booth before 6 p.m.

Republicans faulted the extra time for civilians as too costly for local governments and prone to fraud and abuse. Meanwhile, service members were exempt from the restrictions, allowing them to vote at any time before polls close, an extra three days without restrictions.

As previously reported by ABC News, the Obama campaign sued the Buckeye State last month to block those laws from taking effect, restoring weekend voting as it was in 2008. Democrats say those last days before Nov. 6 give a crucial extra cushion for Americans who might not have had the opportunity to enter the voting booth in the days prior. The civilians’ exclusion, they believe, is arbitrary and a violation of the equal protection clause of the U.S. Constitution.

The Obama campaign says if the challenge is successful military voters would not see a change in their rights.

And here is the text of the lawsuit:

Now, tell me where the voting rights of anyone in the military in this case have changed at all or just slink away.
