Pure Potassium Permanganate is a fine powder that looks black, but when you put a grain in water, it is purple. Actually, the pure stuff is used for water purification Dave

I suspect brake fluid would work as a fire starter as well, we used to use granulated chlorine and brake fluid for the reaction too..
