Grocery store sales rose 0.6% and electronics stores saw a 0.2% boost. Building material sales were remained elevated, rising 0.3%, likely because of rebuilding efforts in the aftermath of superstorm Sandy.
The report showed that excluding autos, retail sales were up 0.2% in January after rising a 0.3% increase the previous month.
January's modest gain in overall retail sales came after an unrevised 0.5% gain for November.
