1911's were reliable for 5 wars and a total of 74 years of military issue. Call me when one of these new age guns surpass them. I would carry a 1911 into any conflict or condition with full confidences.

So...welcome to both OSA and this theater...new operator. Anyway, your post is nice an all but it doesn't really prove anything about reliability. I like and have carried a 1911 too...and yes, even while going in harm's way. However, I have evolved, equipment and weapons have as well, and so have a lot of other people and things. Given my choice of available handguns today for civilian use, (CCW) give me a Glock 19. If I were to have to select a handgun for carry as a sidearm in a combat situation, I'd take ... you guessed it! A Glock 19! Now, I surely as the sun does shine for certain in the name of our Sweet Baby Jesus love me some 1911 goodness, I surely do; but if I have to crawl through the surf zone or slither on my belly liken unto he that be as a reptile, in the muddy swamps, give me not a slick triggered single action 1911, cocked and locked, nay sayeth I! Nay! Instead, I beg that you provideth me with a plastic wunderpistolen bedecked out as a stock Glock 19 . Now, this is of course just my two cents, but you know something? I bet I'm right.

Not new to OSA. But everything you mentioned in the last part of your text there about the surf and slither on your belly in the muck the 1911 been there and done that. Maybe you've heard of a D-Day or the trench warfare of ww1. The monsoons of Vietnam. It's been there and done it and passed with flying colors. The military left in favor of the 9mm for cost and to be more in line with the other NATO countries.

Well heck, it looks like I have some reading to catch up on! I need enlightenment! Imma check that D-Day stuff out and that trench warfare thing too. I like history, and by all that is righteous, the 1911 is rich in its history, and the fine job it did too. You know, in another 75 years or so, it will be interesting to see what legacy handguns may leave, if any. Anyway, I was kinda just yanking your chain and man it sure worked! No offense there my friend, I do admire and indeed even revere old slabsides. I just don't want one as a combat handgun anymore. A range gun; sure. A purty thing? A thing of beauty? Oh yeah. But gimme a modern plastic gun for the fight now, and I'll thank you.

Lots to be said about "to each his own" Every Glock I have ever handled felt weird in my hand. My 45 shield feels way better and my 1911 ... well just lets say it fits me!!! But that is why the gun gods are so awesome, they just keep pumping out new and different weapons so all the weirdos like Drury can have his own favorite!!! Glock over 1911 WTH !!! Blasphemer!!! :Heya:

This is one of the timeless topics of the gun buff, the other being, .45 vs 9mm. The 'ol slab side has a storied place in history as well as the heart of many an aficionado of the finer things. Simply look at the popular 1911 models that occupy the side of many a well dressed businessman, like Baer, wilson, nighthawk, Ed Brown and Clark, all in the venerable .45 or 9mm. Again, look at the 3 o'clock position of your mid-western farmer there lies a Colt, ruger, Springfield or Smith 1911 in generally the time trusted .45ACP. Looking to our city friends in the east we have a plethora of fine firing and functioning Classic Plastic pistols that fit in their business casual attire such as Glock 42/43, Kahr 9/40 and Ruger SR series, all tiny in design as that is their MO. To our western families, in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and Utah. Again, the 1911 reigns supreme. Usually the older the better, no barrel is unworn and every man child learned to shoot one before the age of 5. Going hand in hand with the Winchester '94 30-30 that hangs in the rear window of the pick-up, these 1911s are man guns created by the almighty himself to defend the family against everything from the drunken pack of jackals to the oft encountered Rattler. Heading up north to the regions referred to as tundraesque, we find the 1911 as a back-up gun to the EDC Ruger Redhawks and other revolvers that carry a significant punch starting at the .44 Magnum, to the .45LC, the 454 Casull, the 460, the 500 S&W and finally the 500 Win Mag. Bears are dispatched for the safety of the family, packs of attacking moose are marginalized with their pistol, the carnage feeding the village for the cold harsh winter. You get the drift. While there is no doubt there is a use for almost all pistols from the 1911, to the Wheel gun, to the Plastic High Capacity modern beasts of today, every gun owner from the hobbyist, to the LEO, to the Armed Forces owes their expensive past time to the 1911 and John M. Browning. Without these two parts of gun history there would not be the discussions of weapon choice we have today. It would be a world of six shooters and how sad would that be for all of us?

As translated from the original ancient manuscripts by Fr. Frog.
[emoji767] copyright 2002, 2015 by John C. Schaefer

1 In the beginning was the 1911, and the 1911 was THE pistol, and it was good. And behold the Lord said, "Thou shalt not muck with my disciple John's design for it is good and it workith. For John made the 1911, and lo all of his weapons, from the designs which I, the Lord, gave him upon the mountain."

2 "And shouldst thou muck with it, and hang all manner of foul implements upon it, and profane its internal parts, thou shalt surely have malfunctions, and in the midst of battle thou shalt surely come to harm."

3 And as the ages passed men in their ignorance and arrogance didst forget the word of the Lord and began to profane the 1911. The tribe of the gamesman did place recoil spring guides and extended slide releases upon the 1911 and their metal smiths didst tighten the tolerances and alter parts to their liking, their clearness of mind being clouded by lust.

4 Their artisans did hang all manner of foul implements upon the 1911 and did so alter it that it became impractical to purchase. For lo, the artisans didst charge a great tax upon the purchasers of the 1911 so that the lowly field worker could not afford one. And the profaning of the internal parts didst render it unworkable when the dust of the land fell upon it, and these profaners didst try and fit more rounds of ammunition into the magazines than the holy number of seven, appointed for the .45.

5 And lo, they didst install adjustable sights, which are an abomination unto the Lord. For they doth break and lose their zero when thou dost need true aim. And those who have done so will be slain in great numbers by their enemies in the great battle. a

6 And it came to pass that the Lord didst see the abomination wrought by man and didst cause, as he had warned, fearful malfunctions to come upon the abominations and upon the artisans who thought they could do no wrong.

7 Seeing the malfunctions and the confusion of men, the lord of the underworld did see an opportunity to further ensnare man and didst bring forth pistols made of plastic, whose form was such that they looked and felt like a brick, yet the eyes of man being clouded, they were consumed by the plastic pistol and did buy vast quantities of them.

8 And being a deceitful spirit, the lord of the underworld did make these plastic pistols unamenable to the artisans of earth and they were unable to muck much with the design, and lo these pistols did appear to function.

9 And the evil one also brought forth pistols in which the trigger didst both cock and fire them and which require a "dingus" to make them appear safe.

10 But man being stupid did not understand these new pistols and didst proceed to shoot themselves with the plastic pistol and with the trigger cocking pistols for lo their manual of arms required great intelligence which man had long since forsaken. Yet man continue to gloat over these new pistols blaming evil forces for the negligent discharges which they themselves had committed.

11 And when man had been totally ensnared with the plastic pistol, the lord of the underworld didst cause a plague of the terrible Ka-Boom to descend upon man and the plastic pistols delivered their retribution upon men. And there was a great wailing and gnashing of teeth in the land.

12 Then seeing that the eyes of man were slowly being opened and that man was truly sorrowful for his sinful misdeeds, the Lord did send his messengers in the form of artisans who did hear and obey the teachings of the prophet and who didst restore the profaned 1911s to their proper configuration, and lo, to the amazement of men they didst begin to work as the Lord had intended.

13 And the men of the land didst drive out the charlatans and profaners from the land, and there was joy and peace in the land, except for the evil sprits which tried occasionally to prey on the men and women of the land and who were sent to the place of eternal damnation b by the followers of John.

a Several old manuscripts add the following text. "And they [also rendered as "these men"] didst chamber it for cartridges who's calibers startith with numbers less than the Holy Number 4. And lo the Lord did cause great grief amongst these men when their enemies who were struck in battle with these lesser numbers didst not fall but did continue to cause great harm."

For the faithful, the "feast day" of St. John Moses Browning is January 23.
