She was given this case during her campaign and was told by Ben Crump that she would get no black votes if there was no trial. There was a grand jury ready to hear the case and she did not take the case to them. She was re elected.

That means she had the path cleared. That is part of politics too. That can even be a payoff of another kind.

Whatever the issues with people misunderstanding SYG, I believe they are far outweighed by the problems with the Duty to Retreat laws that SYG replaced.
