Where are they getting fuel? Its several years in to the apocalypse, fuel stations wouldn't pump. Most cars these days are hard if not impossible to siphon and they aren't driving corollas and civics.

It's actually less than two years or so at this point.

Plenty of usable (even if not optimal fuel at this point). Pull fuel lines, puncture tanks, field pumps attached to hoses lowered into gas station pumps etc....

Stored porperly gasoline remains viable for a number of years but will continue to diminish in volatility. Stabilizers can be added but they only work to suspend fuel in it's current state (adding a stabilizer to old gas doesn't rejuvinate it).

BUT: the real reason they have gasoline in the show is because it makes for easier writing. period. There are a number of aspects of this show (looking beyond the obvious zombie outbreak-thing) that do not jive with reality. Firearms with no recoil, food that doesn't go bad (like baby formula) - on and on.

So, I say suspend reality and enjoy the show. don't analyze it to death it takes all the fun out of it. Every show has a budget and most regularly break the laws of physics and biology. this one is no different.

All it would take is a nasty cold snap, and all the zombs would cease operation. Even if the virus thingy survived the freeze, the flesh it jingo-jangos would just kind of separate from the chassis.

Likewise, wouldnt those zombies be a decomposed mess after 24 months? Like: "OMG! That greasy spot under the skelly bones just sneered at me!"

One of the worst things about that world is you could never get any true rest.

If I were set up someplace like that prison, i'd have booby traps and I'd kill the "outside the fence" zombies for exercise. As easy as they seem to die, I'd spread folks out along the fence line so the zombies don't mass up too much and just go to town killing them, and save the ammo for emergencies. With as many survivors as there are at the prison, they could probably make short work of those zombies hanging outside the fence.

Most Zombie themes include some sort of continued biological activity in the zombie. Typically a virus that continues to drive the machine and reanimates at least the basic brain functions forcing continued respiration, blood flow of some sort and the need to feed. The decayed and damaged appearance is typically damage caused by the carelessness of the zombie, flesh rot from various bacteria in wounds that goes untreated, damage that was the cause of death etc.
