I wonder if we have made any real progress?

Scenario 1:
> Jack goes quail hunting before school and then pulls into the school parking lot with his shotgun in his truck's gun rack.
> 1967 - Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack's shotgun, goes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack.
> 2013 - School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized students and teachers.
>
> Scenario 2:
> Johnny and Mark get into a fist fight after school.
> 1967 - Crowd gathers. Mark gives Johnny a bloody nose. Johnny kicks Mark in the nutz. Johnny and Mark both get tired and shake hands and end up buddies.
2013- Police called and SWAT team arrives -- they arrest both Johnny and Mark. They are both charged with assault and both expelled even though Johnny started it.
>
Scenario 3:
> Jeffrey will not be still in class, he disrupts other students.
> 1967 - Jeffrey sent to the Principal's office and gets his ass paddled by the Principal. He then returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again.
> 2013 - Jeffrey is given huge doses of Ritalin. He becomes a zombie. He is then tested for ADD. The family gets extra money (SSI) from the government because Jeffrey has a disability.
>
> Scenario 4:
> Billy breaks a window in his neighbor's car and his Dad beats his ass with his belt.>
1967 - Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college and becomes a successful businessman.
> 2013 - Billy's dad is arrested for child abuse, Billy is removed to
> foster care and joins a gang. The state psychologist is told by Billy's sister that she remembers being abused herself and their dad goes to prison. Billy's mom has an affair with the psychologist.

I would disagree with scenario #2. 2013- Police called multiple squad cars arrive -- they arrest both Johnny and Mark. They are both charged with assault and both expelled even though Johnny started it.

Yep, I have a problem. I have raised my boys to be boys. But in schools these days they can not be boys as I was. I recently had a 16 year old boy send my 12 year old boy a text message, basically threatening him "my son" that if he did not quit talking to his 12 year old brothers girl friend that there was going to be a problem. To which my son replied "Really I have a 16 year old brother too and I think he goes to the same school as you do. You might know him off the wrestling team?" Long story short I ended up talking to the parents of said 16 year old and found out exactly why the young man acts the way he does. I find it very hard to conform to society these days..

My dad used to bring his .22 to school back in the 30's. Teacher would tell them to put it in the closet (with the other hunting rifles), and after school, the boys (sometimes girls) would go hunting. No big deal....and afterwards, they would walk through town and nobody said a word or thought it was strange. Unbelievely, there were no school shootings with loaded weapons in the schools. Dad said if anyone tried crap like that they would have gotten a whoppin' and a half.
Growing up in the 50's and 60's if we got in fights at school, both parties got paddled and then we really got it when we got home. The only time I can remember the cops showing up at school was to give lectures on drug abuse.

This was a sad but funny/tragic post.

The really sad truth is that the children of those who try to teach their kids to mind their manners, speak respectfully to teachers, be mature enough to know the difference between loud-mouthed, empty BS and an actual threat that needs addressing, etc. still have to deal with out of control kids in the classroom and school.

And school officials are reduced to impotent figures who can only levy "fair" (which in this case usually mean unjust and unthinking) punishment on all the same. Yes, times have changed.

Back in my day, we all carried pocket knives. If the teacher needed to cut something and couldn't find her scissors, she would ask if anybody had a pocket knife she could use. Well, 3 or 4 of us would get up, walk to her desk and produce our pocket knives. Then the teacher would grab the one closest to her, open it, cut what needed cut and then close it (yeah, she actually knew how to open and close it :faint:) and hand it back to the owner.

Nowadays, if you show up at school with a pocket knife, you just as well had shot the governor! :ooh2:
