I used to do it for the oven, too. This was back in the day, not sure what they do now in terms of shielding or access to the burners. I just opened up the "broiler" on the bottom and could light the long "chain" burner with a long match or long-neck lighter.
Most of the new, last 10 yrs, require the igniter to heat up, which in turn opens the gas valve.
