Hitler was a genocidal megalomaniac. In no sense was he a worse version of Thomas Jefferson. There was a fundamental difference at their cores. Hitler worshiped power and it corrupted him completely. Jefferson, the deist, respected and elevated the God-given rights of the individual over the power of the state. And he did more than write about it. He and the other founders put their fortunes and necks on the line.
As to Jefferson's role as a slave owner, I won't try to justify it. He was wrong and the other founders were wrong. They chose the convenience of blindness and overlooked the injustice they were perpetrating on blacks while decrying the injustice of King George. It's a tough part of our history with which to wrestle but it does not invalidate the beauty of the nation's founding principles.
