Some people wont ever get "it". Im not a flag waver and when i was in, i mostly hated being in, but im fully aware of how special our men and women are. Them guys standing watch make crap for money, their feet hurt, their knees hurt, theyre cold, hot, sometimes wet and generally feel miserable. They would never admit it. But they have "it", they know what "it" is and "it" is what this country owes each and every veteran. If someone still doesnt understand what "it" is, they should join up. Then they'll get "it".

End of rant.

The following is a snipit from an IM conversation I had on this very subject today. Some people simply do not get it. And they vote...

Yeah...like 80+ mile an hour winds, pounding rain and flooding. I just can't imagine how a mother would explain "daddy's not coming home" because someone thought it was more important for him to march in a hurricane than to get out of the rain and be with his family. Seriously...cannot wrap my head around the "honor" part of something that seems to me to be so ridiculous.
And the fact that people seem to be so caught up in emotional patriotism of it all...even my friends who are like-minded politically with me...I just do not understand.
Don't get me wrong...it isn't that I wouldn't LIKE to understand...because I really would like to "get it"...I just don't. In your spare time - ha - feel free to try to explain it to me.

I sincerely believe 2 years of military service should be mandatory for everyone.

Should the guards stick around if there's a hurricane hitting the tomb?

What about a tornado? Hail? 10 feet of flood water?

Just trying to make sure I understand the breadth of OSA's views here.

I was wondering how the guards would deal with 80-mph winds. It's one thing to be dedicated to your duty, but another thing entirely to try and stand sentinel unsupported when trees are being blown down around you and cars are being pushed across the parking lot.

Those guys will literally risk their lives to stand watch. No one orders them to. They just do it. Competition for these jobs is intense.

Them guys would never willingly abandon their post. If some natural disaster occurred, Im certain theyd either find a way or youd find a dead body. It really means that much.

It appears that they WANT to.

Should doesn't even enter into the equation.

I believe the breadth of OSA's views is pretty much that we are in awe and respect of these fine soldiers and the dedication they exhibit.
