So did you try to explain to them, or did you just tell them to move to Somalia?

Yep, and the person that wrote that has even been to the Tomb and witnessed the very same guard duty. They're so lost in their liberal mentality that any explanation falls on deaf ears. Also voted for Dinglebarry in the last two elections, which should come as no surprise.

Everyone? Even those who would otherwise be deemed medically unfit for service? The blind, the deaf, the mobility challenged? Or those with documented mental issues?

Surely there may some some limitations but I think it's a tragedy that those who are challenged in one way aren't given the opportunity to serve in some way that would take advantage of their strengths.

I can think of one dude right away that I know who has a great head on his shoulders and much to offer despite such challenges. :)

I sincerely believe 2 years of military service should be mandatory for everyone.

Not me. I understand the sentiment...but I'm glad I served with people who wanted to be there and made the concious decision to serve. Serving is a privilege that can earn a badge of honor. That badge has a shine that should not be diminished by reducing it to just another mandatory, common, mandate like high school.

I was called onto the carpet more than once for ever-so-gently reminding some young punk that he volunteered for the job...I can only imagine what would've happened if I ran into some little ***** who whined about being forced to serve.

The guys who guard that tomb epitomize, and embody, the volunteer spirit of our armed forces...no need to change a thing.

I visited the tomb in spring of 1993 when a bad snow storm came through DC. It was wet, cold, and the endless rows of white tombstones was eerily impressive in the snow at Arlington.
I was a 14 year old ********* at the time, and seeing the commitment and honor these men exhibit was exactly what I needed at the time.
Every *********, young or old should visit. Helps gain some perspective I believe...

I've seen enough problems with guys that volunteered to serve. The last thing I need is some douche nozzle that's forced to be there.

I've served with former Old Guard guys. The ones I knew typically fell into 2 camps. The first group were the best garrison Soldiers I ever knew and wanted to go back. They had an answer for any Drill & Ceremonies question and always had the sharpest uniforms, but weren't too hot in the field. The second group couldn't wait to get to a regular line unit and hated the parade ground stuff. They never wanted to go back. There's a third group that was ultra rare in my experience and they embodied the best of both worlds. Me personally I never wanted to do the job, but would do my best to uphold the standard if placed in that position. I fully support the ones that do it and completely understand their desire to do it.
