Need help with finding a good inexpensive transmission shop in the Norman area. I have a 1986 4X4 suburban with the 700r4 trans. It can be outside Norman if I don't have to drive the interstate to get there, I only have first and second gear. I wouldn't mind shadetree mechanics. I don"t have a lot of money to fix it so if it cost to much might have to sell. Thank you very much for any help.

I have used Affordable Transmissions here in Norman many times. They did really good work at a very fair price. they recently rebuilt my Allison in my GMC just not to long ago. I probably have had 4 transmissions rebuilt by them in the last 2 or 3 years.

He's outside of Norman but R-Core Transmissions on Council Road has done 2 for us and both jobs have been stellar ... One of them was a 1999 Suburban (the other a big old pick-up truck that an OSA member is still driving around today far as I know) ... I think that thing is a '99 so don't quote me. (It's a car -- Point A to B, nothing more or less ... )

Price was reasonable, warranties his work, quick turn-around.

I think just put in the 4x4 output shaft and the 4x4 tail housing. Bad part is, I think you have to pull the guts out of the tranny to swap the shaft. Which if your gonna do that, you could just rebuild yours. I worked at Blumenthals Transmission about 11 years ago, so I don't remember all the details now.

Check with RBR Differential & Transmissions. 405-550-4016. He's out east of Thunderbird off Highway 9. I think technically it's Tecumseh. He runs the business from a shop at his house. He did the transmission in my diesel and several of my friend's diesels. He's quite a bit cheaper than we could find and puts a 2 year warranty on them. He did mine about 1 1/2 years ago and I've been happy with it. Quick turn around time too.

Common problem on the 700/4l60 series transmissions is that the 3/4 clutch pack burns up. (They make all kinds of aftermarket clutch packs to cure this issue, so if rebuilt, a good shop will install the fixes.) You could get the 2 wd one, but as stated, you have to pull the guts out to change the output shafts.
