Here's a picture of my home-built wet tumbler. It will hold 10# of ss pins and 10# of brass. I have other pics if you'd like to see it being built.

You can get away with just a tumbler to start with, just throw in a dryer sheet with each tumble. that will capture the 'dust' thats created while the brass cleans.

The ultrasonic is great (we use one as a first clean) to soak really grungy stuff, but it's not necessary.

+1 on the dryer sheet. I usually cut one into six strips, then put them all in the tumbler. Put around a half of a cap full of NuFinish car wax in and the brass comes out shining line new.

tumbler with stainless steel pins, Dawn dish soap, and an anti-spot powder turns old tarnished brass brand new. Ultrasonic cleaners work good for dirt etc... but does not touch the tarnish and staining on the brass.

Brand new 5.56x45 case on left, used and abused 7.62x51 middle, tumbled 7.62x51 case right

Used Thumler's Tumbler Model B, Stainless Tumbling Media, Dawn dish soap, Lemon-Shine detergent (anti-spot) is the perfect combo

As an impressive alternative to wet tumbling....

I soak my range brass in (1 qt. hot tap water, 1 cup vinegar, 1 tbsp salt, 1 tbsp dawn) for about 20-25 minutes and the results are incredible. The brass could be used just like this but I tumble in walnut media with nufinish and a dryer sheet for another hour to get a nice high polish.

I've used and currently have both. Thumbler's tumbler is a little spendy but worth it.

I don't think you have to be so all-fired anal to prefer the wet-stainless either. If you do light loads one benefit is the added safety of the bottom of the cartridge reflecting back up at you just like new brass - added prevention related to double-charges.

I like my Thumbler's Tumbler enough to sell my dry set-up. Had almost forgot I had it.
