Couldn't they just have got their tax stamp and it be legal, or is there something I'm missing? Sorry, I'm not Class III savvy.
No, the only full-auto weapons available for civilian ownership are those that were registered with the ATF BEFORE May, 1986. You cannot add a new weapon to that original list (even if it was MADE before '86), only transfer ownership of the ones that already are. (hence the reason why legal civilian full-autos are so expensive, the supply is fixed, the demand is not.)

Yeah, probably so. But people still call them AK-47s, so clarifying it was full auto was relevant to the story. If it had been semi auto, there would be no story, right?
Or an AK-74, or an RPK lol.
