*Edit*. Just read that you’re picking it up in Kansas. You’re definitely going to need some ice chests. You got something against Oklahoma beef?

Laura Lee: Kansas was all golden and smelled like sunshine.
Josey Wales: Yeah, well, I always heard there were three kinds of suns in Kansas, sunshine, sunflowers, and sons-of-bitches.

That reminds me, we used to get drugs overnighted in that were not in a regular ice chest. The shipper would take a regular but heavy duty cardboard box, spray the bottom and sides with spray insulation foam, place a plastic trash bag in that, add the contents, tied the bag shut, spray the insulating foam over that to fit, then close and tape the box shut.

That stuff is called Instapak foam.
I maintained those guns and systems for a few years at FAA.
Fast forward to 1:25 and see how it works.

Thank you guys for all the offers and suggestions! This is a great community we have!

I want to add to this thread, I'm still looking for a freezer. Might have to go to Big Orange before leaving to get the meat to have the freezer cold by the time I get back.

Also, check at Hahn's down on Reno. We recently purchased a 14 cu ft one a week or so ago. We wanted an upright so that stuff doesn't get lost in the bottom as time goes on, and the big box stores didn't have much. Hahn's had one that we could pick up that day, so we did.

We've been considering the purchase of half a beef and half a pig, and from what we can find in our looking, the 14 cu ft one should be able to hold both halves with a little spare space.

@Snattlerake: FWIW... The larger group you can keep together, the longer they will stay frozen.

As mentioned, you can put the cuts in a large plastic trash bag on blankets, and wrap blankets around it. You can also insert layers of newspaper, etc. because the airspace in between provides extra insulation.

I seriously doubt it would thaw in 3-4 days unless sitting in the sun (maybe not even then if covered with a white/light color on top). Think how long snow lasts in shady areas.

Luck.

Another idea for you.
Get some cardboard boxes. Get some Styrofoam sheets from Lowes, Home Depot, etc. Cut the sheets to line the bottom and sides of the boxes. Then line that with a trash bag. Put the meat in the bag and close it up, put another Styrofoam sheet on top and close the box. Homemade ice chest. Lots of medical supplies and foods are shipped this way.
