Try Downfall. It's a German flick about Hitler's last ten days.

At the time I met him he ran a motel and spent his spare time boating. No idea if he is still alive or what he may be doing. I used to work with one of his boating buddies, and he had never confided his wartime role to him. You know how sometimes you may tell things to complete strangers that you won't share with close friends . . .

He may have gone public since then, or it may be someone else. Ask him if he ever ran a motel in Norman. If he says yes, ask if U-425 means anything to him.

I'm sure this was a different guy. He was out of Florida, sold mugs at gun shows, and he and his wife ran Sharkhunter Tours. They would take groups to Germany and tour some famous war related areas, giving folks a little better insight on the situation over there during the war. He was captured on the U-505 that is now on display in Chicago. Unfortunately, he passed away a few years ago. His wife continued the tours for awhile, but I think someone else has taken that over.

The Pacific, the HBO series directed by Tom Hanks. Bout time the Pacific Theatre of war got represented. FYI : the books, "Helmet for my Pillow" and "With the Old Breed" are the basis of the series and also great reads.

Iwo Jima - 36 Days of Hell is a great documentary with a bunch of comments by vets who were there.

I bought a 2 disc set called Hell in the Pacific Prisoners of the Japanese. It was all interviews of vets and civilians who were there. You can watch all the grainy propaganda footage you can stand and never get the real story like that.

I'll have to check that one out. I know we're talking about movies here, but "Flyboys" was a great read -about those guys that got shot down in the Pacific.
I recently watched a program about Okinawa, the vets on there sounded like all the Pacific war vets I've met. I met a couple guys that had been shot down in Europe, they had completely different opinions on their captors.

Try "The 9th Company". It's a great Russian movie about Soviet soldiers in Afghanistan. People have referred to it as "Russia's Platoon.
