Pewter is soft. You can mark it with your thumbnail. If it's a vase, platter or pitcher, you can bend an edge easily.
Pewter has a certain feel to it - slick, almost greasy.
Pewter will be hallmarked on the back/base.
After you spend money on several not-pewter, and finally catch some pewter, you will see the difference. after a while, you can spot it from across the room.

ETA: If you see the small trays that say "Our Daily Bread" on it, stay away. 99.9% of them are not pewter. Some will even say something like "pewterex" on the back.

"Mexican Pewter" is aluminum.
