From the USS New Jersey. About four minutes in, they start playing interviews with veterans describing what it was like when they fired the big guns.
The ship doesn't move sideways in the water when the guns are fired. It does look like it. This was an old wives tale that went around for years. The muzzle blast causes the waves in the water. Just think about it, the ship is 883 ft long with a draft of 38 ft and weighs 58000 tons at full load.In that pict, it looks like the whole ship was pushed to the right (judging from the white 'waves' near the bow).
