30" 30.06?

I've never seen a 30" .06 before. Most come in 22-24" barrels, a few custom makers use 25" tubes, and an old Mauser had a 26" barrel. But I've never seen a 30". Will you have to use a very slow powder for optimum velocity?

Since you have a long action, why hamstring yourself with a 7mm-08 or 7x57 mauser, when you can maximize the space and go with the well-established .280 Rem (the 7x62mm)?

And if you're gonna use a long barrel, 26" or more, then you really, *really* need to go .280 Rem, not .30-06, to get the most out of the high BC 7mm bullets, which greatly outshine the BCs of .30 cal bullets. Now a short bbl - 18 or 20? You bet, .30-06 (or bigger) is the way to go. But longer, .280 is the best of all worlds, and no bolt swapping. But don't rule out 6.5x55, 6.5-284 Norma, or .25-'06 either, with a long barrel, for some good non-wildcats. For something with more oomph, but a little off the beaten path, also consider .280 AI, 6.5mm-'06 A-square, and .25-'06 AI.

The .280 Rem - the perfect all-around long-range big-game (goldilocks) rifle cartridge, particularly for a lightweight rifle:

Light, heavy, in between - the .280 is good for all. (when do you say the rifle would be 16 lbs?)

But true enough, in a heavy rifle I'd definitely tend toward 6.5mm-'06 A-square or 7mm WSM, rather than the .280 Rem. Also, for a heavy bench rifle, you might also consider .204 ruger, .22-250 (with a 1 in 8 or 9 twist), or 6mm Remington, for a medium range laser. But I believe all of those, except the 6.5mm-06 a-square, are gonna require a different bolt (but you can do that).

I have a T/C Encore ProHunter in .280, and just ordered a Weatherby Mark V lightweight in .280. Gonna keep whichever is more accurate and sell the other one.

Among hardcore Alaskan and Western US hunters, .280 is much more popular than elsewhere in the country and world - and for good reason. It's one of the most popular cartridges in Alaska and the American West.

I agree with Dr. Tad. Right behind that would be a .338-06. I have a 110 in that caliber, and it's a do everything gun that is surprisingly soft shooting (on the back end) and comes closer than one would expect to .338 Win Mag performance out the front. Look it up and see if you want to consider it.

7mm-08 is a good round, but you don't need the long action for it, and the .280, again, is a super deer round, possibly the best of all. CB

Oh yeah, .339-'06 or .35 Whelen - either would be good, for a big ol thumper with some trajectory to boot. I just like the whole family of '06 cartridges, I guess.

Ya know, come to think of it however, after saying all that, it sure would be interesting to see what 210 Bergers, 210 SMKs, 155 Scenars, or 175 SMKs do out of a 30" .30-'06 bbl!
