I just bought 1000 rounds of Federal Match ammo from midway to feed my S&W M41.

It's a premium price to be sure, but why? What manufacturing controls distinguish match ammo from tin can plinking ammo?

Several. Rimfire ammo can be notoriously inconsistent. I've seen as much as 275fps extreme spread from the same box (Remington BTW). With match ammo, the 1st consistency aid is usually Eley priming, whcih is much more unform and consistent on ignition. Then powder controls and bullet uniformity.

There are even .22LR uniforming tools on the market for the serious shooter.

I used to weigh my .22 rounds before a match. Used the High and low weights for warm up and plinking, all in the middle weight rounds for the match.

Have you fired any and can tell a difference?
I have a .22 short that is picky and has problems. For about 1 in 10, the bolt hits too hard and slams the nub of a firing pin too far so that the case bursts along the rim. Gives me a nice little puff of air in the face.
I've been thinking about trying different ammo (since not every casing shows excessive force) before attempting to adjust or modify the firing pin or the distance the bolt travels.
