What's the best accessory to improve your accuracy?

I say it's not a scope, bipod, trigger, rest, or anything like these things.

The best accessory one can buy to improve your accuracy,,,
Is a brick (or more) of quality ammunition,,,
CCI-SV would be my choice.

I just received an e-mail from a range buddy of mine,,,
It seems he isn't happy with the scope he bought,,,
Now he's asking me to recommend a new one.

I keep reading threads where people are trying to "buy" accuracy.

In the case of my friend I've seen him spend well over $300 on optics alone,,,
And that's not to ignore the other $100's of dollars on slings, bipods, etc,,,
Yet I don't believe he's spent even $50 on ammo.

He buys the new gadget and shoots a box of 50 rounds using it,,,
Then finds he isn't an "Instant Sniper" and starts looking for the next gadget.

I can't convince him that practicing with what you have is the best way,,,
When we go shooting he always sets at a bench with bags,,,
Then proceeds to shoot 3" groups at 50 yards.

I always tell him to just keep practicing his technique,,,
And eventually he'll see those groups shrink.

I've given up on trying to talk some sense into him,,,
He's convinced that the "next" accessory will turn him into Carlos Hathcock.

AAAHHHH 22 long rifle I suppose.
I have had a few really good shooting 22 rifles and the Ruger 10-22 isn't even on the list of good accurate rifles for me.
The squires bingham model 16 and the old marlin Model 60 22 are my 2 favorite oh and grandpa's old Savage Gill gun.

One thing with optics and shooting different distances is having the same eye position or have a scope with Adjustable Objective. You can be free of Parallax.

You know this but does your buddy know it?

Same with handguns...they say it doesn't shoot, but would be amazed at what improvement they'd see after 250rds in weekend as they develop a consistant hold and squeeze and sight picture.

Some years back, the very best IPSC shooters did drills with their optiked, comped, funnelled race/space guns, vs bells and whistles 1911 ala Wilson, vs a bone stock 1911, and difference between fastest and slowest was only tenths of a second, which shows the doodads largely a waste at anything but highest level of skill and only matter against others of similar skill, which comes only with practice...

But, people keep buying all the trick stuff, sure that it makes them more competent and deadly.

Draw a 1" square on a business card with a magic marker. Shoot 1" square five times without using a bench. Prone, standing, seated, you pick - but no bipod or bench.

Markers are cheap, .22 is cheap, and getting basics down to where you can consistently do this transfers to all rifle shooting and distances.

Even Carlos Hathcock brought up the Six Steps to Firing the Shot in an interview. It ain't magic.

A good trigger definitely helps with accuracy. As far as optics go, as long as it holds zero and the glass is clear, your usually good on a 22 lr. I agree with the ammo statement to a degree. Some rifles prefer a certain type of ammo and some aren't as picky.

That being said, CCI standard velocity has probably the highest accuracy/price ratio I have found. It shoots well in every 22 rifle I own.

Also, I'm not worried about the guy with 30 rifles, it's the guy with 1 that will out shoot you nearly every time.

With handguns it's dry fire, followed up with live fire. With centerfire rifle it's, dry fire, followed up with live fire.

Most won't dry fire their rimfire guns and that's fine. At least there you can buy more ammo for the gun because it's less per round.

Time on the fundamentals and trigger are essential, regardless of what you're trying to shoot.

Best accessory is good tools. I've helped a lot of people at the range that didn't know they sabotaged themselves and that they were done before they ever even started. Loose scopes, stocks and on some guns, a collage of strap on beamers/flashers/back up sights etc. etc. All acting in a vibrato unison that rivals orchestrated chaos on barrel harmonics.

Funny part, when I first started shooting bought a used Remington 740 in 30.06 with a cheap scope. Read up, bore sighted it and went to the range to shoot at 50 yards (indoor range that was close to me.) 1st shot was almost on target, think it was low, so raised it up a bit, 2nd shot was too the left a bit, adjusted and then shot further left and high. After 5 shots all over the place realized that the original owner never used Locktite on the scope mount.

A friend of mine owned an LGS back in the day. When people would come in and ask for a laser (before they were common), his universal advice was to spend the money on ammo and range time because until you have the basics down, a laser will only show you where you’re gonna miss.
