Im using a .357 with 8" barrel. Ill be using it for deer this year. Ive got several different brands and different grains.

158gr SJFP seems to pretty standard. Has anyone used 140gr Leverevolution in a handgun, for deer??

Pick the one that is the most accurate.
Shoot the deer in the lungs, 40 yards and then a pile of deer.
I load my own and have a lee 158gr mold that has a gas checked swc bullet that weighs in at 170gr
with my mix of wheel weights.
I shot one deer with my 45acp in the neck with a FMJ 230gr 47 paces.. DRT.

Will be packing my 357 this year and see how it does.
It out penetrates the 45acp (265gr about 800fps) when i tested it in oak boards. and the 357 loads were in the 1100fps range.
just slow plinking rounds.

Really does not take much of a weapon to get to a deer's vitals.
The big picture is accuracy.

Im "dialed" in with the Leverevo bullets. All 6 rnds in a softball size circle at 45yds. The Loupold red dot just wont stay steady lol. SIL can get them real tight tho.

Dang good shooting then.
I was like WHAT!!! 45 yards softball 357 mag..
I re read it all and seen 8" barrel..NICE! and Red Dot, that has got to help.

Here is my wheel weight loads standing up shooting iron sights 6" HW357 at 70 feet.
No aim point ,just hold in the center of the paper best i can.

Your groupings makes me want a scope for my old eyes.

I always used a cast SWC with gas check too, with 296 packed in tight. Never did shoot a deer with them tho. I'd be tempted with that lever revolution stuff for the flatter trajectory. Anything 140 or up ought to do it though and that red dot does help. I put one on just to check the accuracy of my loads. It helps immensely compared to the old red ramp FS. Those aren't for accuracy, at least not with my eyes.

I don't own a .357, but I do like the leverevolution rounds in my S&W .45LC.

I've got the dies to start loading for it. I bought the gun with 200 rounds of the LR ammo. Guy bought it new, thought it had too much recoil, and sold it to me.

I'll bet he wouldn't like to shoot my .44 mag. :D

I shoot a Ruger Blackhawk in 357 magnum with a 6" barrel, and it's favorite bullet is Hornady's 140 gr. FTX with a good load of AA #9 powder. It's quite easy to keep all 6 shots inside a 3" target at 40 yds., and if I'm able to hunt this year, I believe I'm going to use this gun and load during gun season....
