If it's not broke, don't fix it. My son shot his first deer in 2008 at the age of 11, it weighed 260lbs. We were using 80gr Winchester Power Points in a Model 1500 Howa Youth 243, he only went 60 yards.[Broken External Image]

.270 Win is the choice if you want a bit larger than 2.43.... but are worried about the recoil of 308 or 30-06.

truth be known... all 3 will do the job fine

Every .270 I've ever shot had well more felt-recoil than a .308. Isn't .270 a long-action (and isn't it based on a necked down .30-06 casing?).

This. Recoil in a 270 is brutal compared to any short action, non magnum caliber that I know of. Hell, its worse than a 30-06, in my opinion.

The 260 Remington would be an awesome choice, in my opinion.

Yes, parent is a .30-06 and I agree, much more felt recoil than a .308.

I agree with those saying the .243 is proven. But if you are just wanting to get something different, then there is much to consider. 7mm08, IMHO is going to have a little less recoil than a .308 and the BC might be a little better, but thats really not an issue with average shooters like ourselves.

I really gotta agree with the .30-06. Its a gun, depending on load, that you can grow into. Plus, I am always thinking about other game I would be able to use it on...

Here here!! My first rifle was a .270, and even at the macho age of 18, it just about broke my desire to ever shoot again.

Both my .243 and 7mm-08 are FAR more pleasant to shoot. And I'd have to say I think the .243 is just a little more on the easy side to shoot.
