I have sat all day dove hunting in 95 degree temperatures...why not deer!
It isn't based on any herd health or balance.
I am in support 100% in zone where populations are healthy enough to support it. Wish it included archery. I will definitely be in the woods for a chance at a velvet buck. This document says that the population survey will be used to determine which zones qualify. Hope it passes!
My first thought is that antler velvet is expensive and a highly desirable component in Chinese medicine. I’m willing to bet opening a velvet season here is going to do for the state what marijuana farms have to some extent.
Plus . . . just carry your phone with you and fire up YouTubeTV . . . best of both worlds.
Another thing i was considering: this will hurt the buck age spectrum as people will shoot small bucks just because they're in velvet. This will spare some bucks during the rut if those hunters take one velvet and one during archery or regular muzzleloader. Catch .22.
I don't think politicians should have much say in wildlife conservation regulations.
reality is folks been shooting them for decades in the velvet. old joke is season opens july 4th .
I agree, this should have went through the wildlife dept channels. Politicians have had their hands in wildlife forever though and the only way things get changed now.
Update: You will not get the chance, this bill died last week. Stick to hogs until October.
