Found out it was a presentation gun with an individual SN.

Just called Winchester. They were very helpful and gave me the information for free! Unfortunately I have a newer model as it was made in 2011. They said it was a Model 70 Featherweight Compact.

Amen. I'm still puzzled by that serial number. Did they provide any insight about the when, why and wherefore regarding that format?

They didn't. But I believe it changed when FN took ownership.
