Electric cars pollute to the same degree as petroleum fueled cars. They just do it at the beginning and end of their lives vice during.
Making those batteries is a major source of pollution. Disposing of them is a major source of pollution.
And where does the electricity come from to charge them? Unless it's generated by a nuclear plant then every time the car's batteries are charged they're creating pollution at the electric generating plant.
Lost of eastern European countries get their electricity from geothermal sources. Thats pretty dang clean.
Now Europe breaks down like this:
31% coal
28% nuclear
22% gas
10% Hyrdo
The rest is Biomass, wind, etc
The US is:
44% coal
23.4% gas
20.3% nuclear
6.9% Hydro
The rest is various
So not much difference. I wish we used more nuclear here. Wont be too long before we're actually going to need it.
Say it aint so!!
All the treehuggers would have you believe that electricity to recharge their cars is made right behind the socket they plug into and it just appears by magic.
I work in an industry full of them, most of the ones I have spoken with push NG and Nuclear supplemented with Wind and Hydronics.
