I don't think that anyone was actually advocating hitting a woman for their mate choices, but what did she think was going to happen? The dude has a history of violence and domestic violence.
It is possible that she didn't know his history. There are many possibilities that would explain how a woman dating him would be normal. It is also quite normal for a woman to date a man with a history of violence.
