Personally I would not molest the finish. An old Winchester like that needs to speak it's experience, and if you go re-finishing, yes, it will look pretty, BUT, it will be a stark contrast to the metal wear and in my opinion does it a dis-service.

That aside, NICE FIND!!!!!

Is a 32 special even stout enough to take anything bigger then a coyote?

I'm thinking you must be confusing .32 ACP (or another .32 caliber handgun round) with .32 Winchester Special. A .32 special cartridge is nearly identical to a 30-30, but it pushes a slightly larger hunk of lead, I'm pretty sure it would have no problem dropping anything I'm likely to encounter in the woods in Oklahoma.

Left to right: 30-30, 32-40, 32 Special

And I think you guys may have talked me out of refinishing the wood.

.32 Special it not a common round but that makes this gun more interesting.

I think so too. I've been thinking of getting into reloading, owning a .32 win spl may be the final push that it takes to get me started.

One option is to get a replacement stock from someplace like Boyds and tuck the original away. Good score on this one!

I may consider going this route.

Does anyone know where I can get a leather sling of the type that ties to the butt and magazine/ barrel? Prefer local, but I'll order one if I have to. Regardless of what else happens, I know I want a sling and don't want to drill the wood for swivels.

It just arrived this afternoon. I went out to my shootin' spot as soon as I got home. It's too hot for too much serious shooting today, so I just filled the magazine, shot it six times, and came back in the house. I believe it could use a good oiling, which I plan to take care of this evening, but everything works well and it shoots straight. I love this gun!

Here are a couple more pictures, it looks a lot better in person than it looked in the seller's pictures. The blueing is a lot darker than I expected it to be, and the wood looks a lot better than I thought too. The only thing it really needs is a good cleaning & oiling and some cooler weather so I can take it out for some more target practice.

Personally, I'd leave 'er alone. Bro-inlaw has a .32 WSP and does very well with it down the woods of SE OK. Mild shooter but does push a bigger bullet.
Finding factory ammo may be iffy but to me....that's just another excuse....er....reason to get to reload another cool old caliber.
