I've had to kill hundreds of skunks over the years while trapping. I've shot them with everything from a .22 to a 30-06 with HP bullets. Head shot, gut shot, they will spray before they die.

Since I started using that technique, I've not had a spray. My kill count since then is 12.

Second hand info but from reliable sources:
Use a live trap, covered with a sack or old blanket. Approach so they can't see you and they will not spray. Drop live trap in water. Problem solved.

This works. I had a threesome that I couldn't get out from under my house. Oklahomabassin showed me to put the trap in a 30gal black trash bag. Worked like a charm.

A trapper I once met told me that the only way to dispatch a skunk without it spraying is to get a heart shot with a 22. The other thing he said is to skin it underwater incase it does spray while skinning it then just your arms will smell. He was wearing a skunk hat so I tend to believe he knew what he was talking about.

I think a spine shot should also do the trick since it takes a muscle contraction to fire the spray... but I've never done it so I can't be sure.

Let us know how it goes as I think this could be very informative, there are tones of skunks in my area. And one more thing, bleach and hydrogen peroxide (not mixed, but used alternately) DO work to bring the smell down if you do get sprayed.
