I have a postwar SA Garand that Perplexed was looking over very closely recently. He had a hunch the stock was WWII Winchester but we couldn't find any markings. Though we were outside that morning it was a bit overcast. Recently I decided the that finish on the stock in question was a little too "built up" so I did a linseed oil scrub on it. Today I applied a fresh coat of linseed oil to the stock.

Looked what popped out in the sunlight:

Very nice

I think I spy a WRA Drewry inspectors cartouche, crossed cannons, and an AAK rebuild stamp (not sure if that is Augusta or Anniston).

What are the dimensions of the inspectors cartouche? If it is 1" x 1" you have an incredibly rare stock (June 1942- October 1942). Even if it is the smaller .82" x.75" (October 1942- July 1945) it is still a very desirable stock. If it were mine, I'd post a WTT ad on the CMP site and see if you can trade for a correct 1/2" DAS SA stock for your rifle plus additional cash on the side.

It's the smaller of the two. I've given some thought about trying to locate the correct SA stock but haven't yet decided what I want to do. For the back story, this Garand came from the CMP around 15 years ago. My ex father-in-law went in with some of his fellow Air Guard buddies and they all got Garands. He fired his a bit but mostly it sat in the safe and he talked about selling it. I told him I'd take it so I bought it from him. Once Perplexed checked out the rifle it sealed the deal for me; it's a keeper. It has the original barrel and the muzzle wear is .75. This WRA the action tight and I'm tempted to keep it just as it is. It also has lock bars on the rear sight, which isn't correct.

On the flip side, I have a soft spot for getting a rifle "correct" and I know someone out there is looking for a WRA stock. Anyhow, I still have to figure out just what I want to do with it.

Here is my contribution to this thread. Gun used to belong to a Cleveland (OH) Police Swat guy, who gave it to my father, who left it to me when he passed. The people who like to leave originals alone aren't going to like it but I love it. Haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, hopefully one week night here soon.

Ripnbst, it depends on its history. Yours may be a Plainfield or Iver Johnson. If it's one of those, no worries since it isn't USGI so have fun with it! What does it say on the rear portion of the receiver?
