Good for you! I happen to have 14 years as a Reserve Deputy, all volunteer, all unpaid. I also have over 20 years in private and federal security experience. I have considerable experience in writing policies and procedures regarding security, both armed and unarmed, along with executive protection experience. I have significant experience in applying laws and regulations on both the state and federal level. I'm currently working on a committee to utilize Dept of Homeland Security grant funding in the Tulsa Urban Area Security Initiative. I work closely with local, state and federal agency department heads on Homeland Security issues on a frequent basis. I'm a trained and certified Liaison Officer for the Oklahoma Information Fusion Center. I also volunteer to present Active Shooter Response training for citizens, companies and organizations which I developed and is authorized by my agency.

I have considerable experience in the area we're discussing. I'm open to any reasoned and logical discussion on the matter. I am not however, open to negative attacks with no basis other than a singular opinion. :)

Good points YJ. I've admitted I am coming to believe I made a mistake. Now I am going to do what I can to rectify it. And just FYI to ALL of you...if the Republican Party was not continuously trying to take away my means of making a living, I'd probably be Chair of the party by now.

Good for you. I hope this is going to turn into a national trend, but I'm not holding my breath. But on the other hand it has to start somewhere right?

As a school district employee in the business office side of things I would certainly be in to do anything I could do, but it needs to go beyond classroom teachers. I would pony up a gift certificate to TDSA's advanced combat pistol 1. It'll never happen though, school district administrations will be certain it gets quashed.

I agree that this is probably a pipe dream... although I am still willing to try. While I support the good Senator's efforts, I do not really think CLEET cert is the answer. We do NOT need our teachers to be cops. That is not what we want, I don't think. What we want is someone who is, as described above, a "sleeper". A teacher (or multiples) who carries daily and is well-trained and prepared for the eventuality of violence coming to their school. And that is all. As pointed out above, some simple changes in state law will remove the CCW ban on school property, allowing parents and teachers and employees to carry if the school district approves them! And then, it is simply up to us as concerned citizens to pressure our school boards to issue meaningful policies allowing whatever security measures we as LOCAL individuals deem appropriate.

In this way, each school district can tailor its policies and security to meet their own needs. No one-size-fits-all federal or state mandates. Just remove the gun-free zone wording and let us sort it out locally.

We are going to press forward. I left a message for Rep. McCullough today. We are going to use the full power of the membership of OSA to try to help get this passed. And once passed, we are going to demonstrate what responsible, patriotic gun owners will do for their communities.

§21-1280.1.

POSSESSION OF FIREARM ON SCHOOL PROPERTY

A. It shall be unlawful for any person, except a peace officer or
other person authorized by the board of education of that district or
governing body for any public or private school
, to have in his or her
possession on any public or private school property or while in any
school bus or vehicle used by any school for transportation of
students or teachers any firearm or weapon designated in Section 1272
of this title.

B. "School property" means any publicly or privately owned property
held for purposes of elementary, secondary or vocational-technical
education, and shall not include property owned by public school
districts or private educational entities where such property is
leased or rented to an individual or corporation and used for purposes
other than educational.

C. A gun or knife designed for hunting or fishing purposes kept in a
privately owned vehicle and properly displayed or stored as required
by law, or a handgun carried in a vehicle pursuant to a valid handgun
license authorized by the Oklahoma Self-Defense Act, shall not be in
violation of the provisions of this section, provided such vehicle
containing said gun or knife is driven onto school property only to
transport a student to and from school and such vehicle does not
remain unattended on school property. However, for the purposes of
participating in the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife certified hunter
training education course or any other hunting, safety or firearms
training courses, the principal or chief administrator of any public
or private school where said course is offered may authorize firearms
or other weapons to be brought onto school property and used in such
training course.

D. Any person violating the provisions of this section shall, upon
conviction, be guilty of a felony punishable by a fine not to exceed
Five Thousand Dollars ($5,000.00), and imprisonment for not more than
two (2) years. Any person convicted of violating the provisions of
this section after having been issued a concealed handgun license
pursuant to the provisions of the Oklahoma Self-Defense Act, Section
1290.1 et seq. of this title, shall have the license permanently
revoked and shall be liable for an administrative fine of One Hundred
Dollars ($100.00) upon a hearing and determination by the Oklahoma
State Bureau of Investigation that the person is in violation of the
provisions of this section.

Regarding GTG's quote of the law... Am I reading this wrong, or does it basically say that no law needs to be passed and that individual School Boards can determine who can and cannot carry on the schools within their district?
