My wife is wanting to get a privacy fence for the backyard with the tax refund this year. Just wondering how much difference there might be in price/maintenance/installation between the wood type and vinyl type. Will want a drive thru gate and probably two walk thru gates. Also, while we don't live in a "high crime" type of place by no means, I've wondered about the ability of someone being able to get into my shop unseen behind this type of fence vs chainlink or other types. Thanks for your opinions! :)

My fence has a drive gate that's made with a removable center post and one side is 4 ft wide and the other is 6 ft. Eliminates the need for a 2nd walk through gate. Works fine and I use it most every day. All the steel posts are schedule 40 I think. Those posts Lowes or HD sells will bend or break off in a 50 mph wind so don't waste money on them.

All I can say is, DON'T go through home depot. They subcontract out to the Deck and Fence Store out of MO, who subcontracts out to random contractors here. The guy that did mine did a piss poor job on my double gate, and I'm going to have to redo it.

Well yall are just supporting what I already thought on the vinyl fencing. Does anyone know where I could price the rough cut cedar? Sounds like a nice option, they used to build a lot of stuff with cypress when I lived in LA, always liked the wood look. And I won't be using Lowes or Home Depot, closest one is 2 hours away; will either do it myself or hire local "handyman" to do it. Anyone in western OK, feel free to recommend a contractor that does this kind of work, especially Elk City/Woodward area. Thanks again guys!

There is a world of difference between cheap vinyl and good vinyl. Good vinyl is much more durable. We've had ours for 5 years and no cracks, no lost or blown away panels. It still looks great. Now it did cost $12k, but if it will last even another 5 years, I'd say its worth it. That would be $1,200 per year. I fully expect it to last at least 20 years however.

You may look around your area for a saw mill.
I built my cedar fence from cedar slabs from a sawmill.
20 bucks a load and 1 load did 64 feet of fence..
