I think the way it works for a lot of people is this:

"When the power and authority of the state is employed to achieve a social outcome I find desirable it's for the common good".
"When the power and authority of the state is employed to achieve a social outcome I object to it's called tyranny".

I think you're right. But then again I don't think the state has any place in employing its power and authority to achieve social outcomes.

We have lots of social engineers right here on this forum out to engage the government in protecting us from ourselves.

Personally, I'd prefer the government butt the heck out to the maximum extent possible. For instance, if the government had never gotten involved in the marriage business in the first place there would never have been any point to much of the current discourse.

No authority....I have been given a "vote" by our government. That "vote" is supposed to insure that my beliefs are recognized. If my beliefs and "vote" are recognized, then this is the law of the land. In this particular case....the majority of the "voting" population was ignored and the minority "vote" perspective was carried and passed.

What about when a majority of voters elect ant-gun politicians that pass laws that infringe on the 2a?
Do we go with the voters or the constitution?

Actually, yes! It's hard to raise kids without outside influences affecting that process. Try explaining to a child about why it's not okay with God to be intimate with the same sex while there are 2 guys making out in the isle at Wal-Mart! Kinda hard to do when the minority is okay with it though it is law.
