is there anything better?

Something I've been thinking about lately...for the average concealed carrier who prioritizes always having a gun, is there really anything better than a j-frame? What do you think?

What caliber? I bought one in .38 special several years ago with a 2" barrel.

It only dented the side of a 55 gallon shipping drum. A .22RF will go through both sides of the same drum.

Sold it at the next gun show.

Yes. A Ruger LCR.
I hear you. I guess I mean "small-framed snub-nosed revolver".

I guess caliber will always be part of the compromise. Is there a platform/caliber compromise that you think is best?

I used to be a die hard S&W revolver fan and thought there was no better revolver made. Still am in large part, but in certain limited situations there are much better options. This is one of them.

Admittedly, I haven't owned the LCR; but I did shoot one. Other than a better trigger out of the box, I didn't see much else to get excited about. In what ways do you think the LCR is better?

The .38 special has killed thousands of folks. It has also caused the death of hundreds of LEO, and military folks when that round proved ineffective for the most part.

The +P and .357 has increased the lethality of that round.

We had a thread on here once saying the .22 mag should be a great SD round. I put one across the chrony from a 2" pistol, and got 1200 fps.

A thread today touting the 5.7 and the .22TCM showed the .22 RF had more penetration that either round that had higher velocities and heavier weight bullets.

I'm not saying the .22 RF is the ultimate, but it was an interesting result.

I've dissected enough deer to know that bullet construction vs velocity has a huge say in the game.

Not that the .38sp. is the best option if you know you're likely to get in a gun fight, but modern loads (e.g., Speer 135gr. +p) are better than those used in most LEO/military horror stories. I'm talking specifically for the average concealed carrier, is there anything better? If you desire, you can get .357 Mag and 9mm +P+ chambered in a small-framed snub-nosed revolver.
