Exactly. You've got lots of good, good people deciding not to arm and defend themselves and their family. They decide to do nothing. To me they are the epitome of those who do nothing in the face of evil. I'm not willing to risk my family, my life, my freedom for someone who knowingly and with forethought decide every day to not arm and defend them self and their family. They make their decission, I make mine.

I did 20 years in the military. Every single day I was sworn to take up a weapon and defend whoever my government told me to defend, anywhere in the world. With my life if need be. That was my place in life. I'm no longer in the military, nor am I a cop. I know my place in this world and in this society. I'm no cowboy of Hollywood notions. I take care of me and mine. I can't do that rotting away in prison after having persued some over glorified notion. I strive to live within the law. I will step outside the law if it means protecting me and mine. If someone choses to not take full advantage of what's provided by law to protect them self and their own, well, they have made their choice. And I've made mine.

And when the vast majority of employers in this state specifically deny an employee the right to arm themselves on the job? Or what if they ARE armed, have a shotgun under the counter, a pistol in the small of their back, whatever - but the bad guy got the drop on them and they have no chance to draw/reach for their weapon without getting shot? You have the drop on him - how would you feel if you (or your wife or kid, for that matter) were killed while a private citizen stood by and said, "Well, they weren't prepared. Guess it's on them."

Yes, situational awareness, carrying regularly, etc., all are important. But it's also important for us as a society to stand up to crime and say, "NO MORE!" Don't you think? You spent 20 years in the military - were you in Iraq or Afghanistan? How many times while you were there did you bemoan that the local populace wouldn't stand up for their own country, society, whatever? Isn't that the same thing you're advocating here? "Mind your own business, move along... doesn't matter if someone else gets raped, injured, killed, etc. As long as it doesn't affect me." Sure... it's legal. Personally, I don't think I could live with myself. You gonna stand there in the driveway watching that young man beat up the cop a couple of months ago, too? You're not a cop, not your place - let that young man beat the cop senseless with his own baton and then kill him with his own weapon - "That damn cop wasn't much of a hand-to-hand fighter - guess he took his chances and he lost. No skin off my nose."

I will not stand by and watch... until he pulls the trigger? No, thanks.

Keep in mind you are allowed to defend a third party who is in a life threatening situation. Also, if he has his gun out remember that he turn and fire in probably under .5 second which is considerably faster than most can draw. If it were me, I start backing away, drawing and looking for cover while hoping for the best in being a good witness.
If the robber is a 'pro' who is calm and collected and not fidgeting, probably no issues. If he is hopped up and nervous and starts beating the clerk or fires a round off, then I've got to defend myself.

For those of you who would not give the BG a dirt nap in this instance, change the scenario a little and answer this:

Bad guy enters movie theater and begins shooting only the patrons on the far end of the opposite isle and is working away from you. You have no friends or family with you and plenty of time and distance to run away. Do you maneuver to where you can safely perforate the BG's skull from whatever direction that may be, or run away, or wait until you are the target, or what?
It's the same situation morally. I won't presume to know what your priorities in life are, or what you are capable of doing in that situation and your decision is your own, but i know what i would do.

If my kids aren't with me, and he is actively killing people, I will do my best to maneuver on him and kill him. If my kids are with me, and his attention is not towards us, I will get them clear and do nothing to draw his fire until they are safe.

Nothing!!
Jump a bare nakid choke, hooks in, face down on the floor, ..now go to sleep my little robber...
Now lets remember the law Does allow, if a felony is being committed
I like the idea of drawing and backing away.....but theres problems with that too
The thing is, you have to be able to articulate why you felt in fear....with a gun drawn and a man demanding money/threatening clerk/other patrons...I think that would be obvious...

It would be hard for me to predict what I'd do, but I don't think I could do nothing. In any scenario, my first priority after the incident would be to head to the nearest store selling underwear. (Hmm, maybe I ought to start carrying a change of clothes in my vehicle ... and replace the spare handkerchief in my back pocket with a pair of underwear...)
