My step mother recently got a Mossberg 505 in 410 for defense

She's 70 somthin years old, and can tolerate #9 shot all day. #6 was pushing her comfort level

So my question is, is # 6, 7, 8, or 9 good for defense?

I know nothing about 410

She already has the gun so suggestions on what she should go and get isn't really going to help

I would go with the lowest # she feels comfortable with.
What are her living arrangements? What I am getting at is how many walls between her and her nearest neighbor?
I don't think 410 #6 is terribly good at wall penetration if she is only one wall between her and her neighbor, maybe I'd go with #7.

I'm sure someone with more experience will come along shortly and weigh in.

Way to go stepmom BTW

My $0.02 for this situation,
Train light, fight hard. There would be absolutely nothing "comfortable" about a home Defense situation for an elderly female. Training daily/weekly to become more proficient with your weapon system is one thing, training to fight for your life is another thing entirely!
If possible, take her shotgun to a GS to weld on a muzzle brake. This well not only help with her confidence, but greatly improve recoil mitigation for a follow up shot... ALWAYS train for follow up shots... you really want that muscle memory there, because if that shotgun goes off in an enclosed dwelling at night, she's going to forget that she's the one that shot it! Hmmm... actually, a cheap silencer for her HD shotty might be a great Christmas present!

Now there's an oxymoron if I've ever seen one!

Brakes are nice outdoors for mitigating recoil, but I wouldn't want or recommend one for an indoor gun.

Within an average sized room, there won't be much difference in stopping-power, because the shot won't spread much. This also means she has to be accurate with shot-placement.

Having said that, I'd not recommend anything smaller than #7 1/2. But she needs to tolerate the (whatever) chosen shot-size without flinching. And a hit with #9 beats a miss with anything else.
