I put my Taco up for sale and did not put my contact information because I want to use craigslist messaging instead. Most responses I get are about me sending them my VIN. I will tell them to send me a phone number and I will call them with the vin. Normally, I never hear from them again.

Are they using the vin to create fake craigslist ads with a good vin?

They'll try to have you do a VIN search on it that they get paid for. It's a common scam. They're just checking to see if you have a VIN and then they'll ask you to use a specific website to do a VIN check before they'll buy.

I use Craigslist from time to time. Always a significant number of scammers reply, but a good guy here and there as well. Just have to be smart about things.

^^Right on the money. I use a free app called Sideline on my iPhone; it gives me a second phone number that I use when I post ads on Craigslist or anywhere else - second number rings through my phone and I can text using it, so I never have to give out my real number.

U say 75,000! That's not good! Oil should be changed every 3000/5000 miles?

I buy and sell occasionally on CL. Have a buddy who resells for a living on ebay and CL, he says treat like a storefront. Dealing with the general population, good and bad. The more you do the easier the scammers are to spot.

I sell a lot on craigslist and ebay. This year has been slow for car sales, but usually if priced right, a used vehicle will sell within a couple of months(also depends on the price range). I just put calls only and change the ad if I need to(i.e. no trades). Scammers come as both buyers and sellers, so using the messaging system only reduces your likelihood to sell. Most people that only text will waste your time because they are bored, so a phone call is the best way to deal with serious buyers initially and texts confirming details or setting up a meeting are ok.
