I think Ersland was a nutbag who talked himself into prison. I think he was guilty of abusing a corpse, lying to the police and creating a persona that would’ve elicited sympathy, had any part of it actually been true.

I really don’t care if the armed robber died from the first round or the last. He rolled his dice and took his chances. He rolled snake eyes, oh well!

Yes there are always exceptions. I was referring more to the getting out of car to confront someone approach. It is not worth it. Since I choose to carry a weapon for self defense, I find it wise to avoid situations that may increase the likelihood of me having to use it. I know that is not always possible. It has however served me well.
Always a good idea to have OC spray in case some idiot needs a dose.

A lot of 60-something firearms instructors not living up to their training?
A lot of firearms instructors and so called operators are just fat guys who have played too much call of duty. Think about instructors you know. How many are in good enough physical condition to run 25 yards or engage in a wrestling match for 30 seconds without the need for CPR? Some of them can shoot really well but do little to nothing to stay in shape. Any of us can armchair quarterback this situation but we weren’t there. I guarantee most of us have flipped other drivers off or became irate while driving. Some of us might have been stupid enough to get out of our vehicles. We like to think it couldn’t happen to us. I hope we are right.

Keep in mind spraying someone with OC isn't always treated the same as using deadly forced in self defense . I am not a lawyer but I would at the very minimum ask one , just because the police can employ less than lethal weapons doesn't mean you can the same way .

I've seen enough videos on Youtube about these type of altercations and I'm betting the retired cop pulled his carry and used it before it got to the 'beat down' stage, not only because of the age difference but also because of training (21-ft rule). Also pretty sure the ego amped-up victim didn't bother to think before he rushed in.
Or the shooter used his perceived, practiced, authorative nature and aggressivly approached the victim. Then causing the victim to act defensively giving the shooter the rehearsed "I was in fear of my life" defensive excuse and the unfortunate crossing of that blue line. All speculation at this point. Guilt should most likely fall on the 1st person to leave their vehicle and approach the other. But we only get to hear one side of the story now. Hopefully there are enough witnesses to keep it straight. Lotsa Loosers in these stories. Mostly the families who live with it (both sides), not as much those who have passed from it or are left to think about it.

I’m aware and trained in its use. IF this guy was being physically attacked by an unarmed person OC spray might have been a viable option.

There is no guarantee OC is going to prevent an attack. I've had people literally wipe it from their eyes and keep coming. The same thing can be said for tasers, you can't be 100% certain either is going to stop someone.

No guarantee on a bullet either but I’d rather have it. If I used it before a gun I think it might help my defense. Maybe not.
