Seems to me if you are serious about carrying a handgun for defense you will spend a few extra dollars and make sure your gun will feed hollowpoints reliably. I agree for smaller calibers a fmj maybe just the ticket to get good penetration. However anything from 9 on up a hollowpoint has a lot less chance to exit your target. And as JP said if it goes to trial just tell the attorney that you are just using the same load as my local PD. FWIW our dept leaves the choice up to us as to what to carry. For me Gold Dot 124gr.

See guys . . . it's not like I really ever had a choice -- the koolaid was ice cold and pretty good, I might add -- JHP in my Colt Gold Cup and all of the Glocks I carry (depends on which purse I am using). :teehee:

Federal HST 230gr. +P in my Glock 30SF. The main reason for carrying this round is for expansion. I don't want to run the risk of shooting through my target. I've seen where this round has been measured at .895 thousands of an inch after expansion; which is nearly double it's original diameter of .451 (picture included). I also want to know that the BG is will be stopped after one round to center mass.

This picture is quite incredible.

I think the reason that you are seeing "gangsters" using FMJs is that they are CHEAP. This is the same reason you see very few carrying those "dangerous" "assault weapons"...for the most part they are going to carry some cheap POS that they can get without being tracked.

Oh, and I carry FMJs for goofing around on the ranch and fishing.

Hydrashocks are too expensive to be lobbing at cottonmouths!

When on the ranch, I have a mag of FMJ loaded, but I have access to a mag of JHPs that I swap out when I head back to civilization.

JHP in my .38sp. I thought that is what you are actually what you are "supposed" to have in your carry weapon for legal reasons and preventing over penetration.

Me, too, but not until it was explained to me. I don't think a lot of people realize just how far a bullet can travel, even when it goes through stuff.

300 grain JSP in my .44s which are primarily for hogs.

The above mentioned hog shoot with a .45 using FMJs is pretty typical of NEG (Not Enough Gun) when it comes to hogs. Hollow points are even worse, particularly in body shots on pigs. The skin on a boar's shoulder is often over two inches of scar tissue, and causes hollow points to sting very badly as they bottom out in the hide.

For daily carry, like most here, I carry FMJ in little guns and JHP in the larger ones. One exception. I like 230 grain FMJ in my .45s. CB

I understand your point and for the most part agree, however... I want to respectfully point out that expecting one round to do the trick is a very, very bad idea. You never know who youll be coming up against, and if theyre cracked out on something that has them wound like an 8 day clock, theres no telling what it will take to stop them. There numerous reports of BGs taking MULTIPLE (10 even 20+) hits to center mass from cops before they go down. That being said, fire, slack out and see if he needs another, if he does give it to him and repeat the process until he stops doing what made you shoot him in the first place. Never depend on 1 magic bullet, there is no such thing.
To agree with you i also carry 230 JHP +P (Hornady TAP)

I would never completely depend on a 1 round stoppage; that's exactly the reason my 30SF carries 10+1. I do find it highly doubtful that any one person would still be standing after taking a round like the HST to center mass. The BG may still be breathing after taking the round; but my intent is not to kill the BG....it's to stop the threat. If the BG were still a threat after assessing the situation; more force would be dealt.
