I have the fever for a 1911 pistol but lots of options can you all help?

If you shop a little... Plain Jane Colts for $800-ish

This is always my recommendation, but as others mentioned what works for me doesn't work for everyone.

I don't necessarily care for a beaver tail (never had hammer bite), ambi safeties, extra fancy slide serrations. Others like these details, but they are not worth paying extra for me. So I went with Colt due to is being American made, the original 1911 company, forged frame, quality internals, and they still sell it in a classic blued (versus coated) finish.

The biggest negatives for me with a plain Jane Colt are poor sights, no checkering on grips (replacing a MSH is easy, but checkering a grip front requires refinishing a blued pistol), and generally price versus features (particularly when compared to a Springfield, which is also forged).

Which factors are important to you are something to be decided before picking up a pistol.

Colt:

Colt quality, Colt re-sale value(I know...you'll never sell your guns:wink2:) Colt trade in value.

****Just like a Rolex watch,it may not always be the best choice, but dang if everyone KNOWS what a Colt is and dang if they don't always compair to it.

Is it as good as a Colt or less?????

Let this speak for itself....every time I have walked a gun show with a Colt 1911, dealers or people at the gunshow stop me and ask me is that a.........Colt???

I'm currently looking at the RIA 1911 family. I need a good 1911 all purpose shooter as my other 1911's are semi-collectible colts(1966 Government Model & 1968 Commander LW).

The series 80 is an excellent starter Colt.

I currently am looking at the new/ re-make series 70. The only collectible ones that I know of are around or about 1950's and later. Then you have the "War" series....WWI & WWII.

My collectibles will never see a live round fired through them as long as I own them, but heck, the ones that I have bought through the 1970's-2010 are my shooters....1911 that is.

Now my Pythons....they're a different story and they're not a 1911...:wink2:

I'm not certain on the lower priced gubermint models but I've been considering trying the RIA tactical model just to satisfy my curiosity.
I like my Colt and Kimbers are ok also but IMO Springfield Armory and S&W is what I'd look at if in the market for 1911's.

If I was going to spend a little more $$$ I would more than likely get a used Colt, Sig or STI. I like Springfield's and may look at an EMP down the road for a carry gun as well.

If you are looking for a good shooter for a good price then I have to recommend the RIA Tactical. I recently traded for an RIA Tactical and I really like it so far. It has a surprisingly tight fit for a gun in this price range. Just look online and you will see how many people appreciate these Rock Islands. Just to note, they are cast pistols so if you want to do slide/frame work then that is something to think about. If checkering/serrations is something on your to-do list then a SA might be more inline due to their forged frame. Regardless the RIA is a great entry 1911 and won't give you very many, if any hickups.

I'm seriously liking the looks of the SA Range Officer. Good base gun, basic addons that most people would want/need, and little else. And if you can get one for $675, good deal at that!
