I have an old Delta Homecraft (46-230 I think) wood lathe. The motor will run if I hand turn it to start rotation. Googling and YouTube says look at the capacitor. To replace it, would I take the cover off the motor to disconnect or cut wires. Or salvage it for copper and try to find a replacement? Thanks for any help.

If you open it up the round cover on the top, most likely the start capacitor will have a micro fared value on it " X uF" Most likely in the 30-40 uFrange. Just replace it with a similar item 8-12$ from Amazon and you should be good to go another 20 years. Amazon has hundreds, just get one the shape and size that will fit in the space. Most likely it will have tab lugs you can pull off and slide on the new one. Lots of U-Tubes out there to show how simple it is to change them out.
