I was looking at some point in getting into a .17 rifle.

I am a bit confused (duh) on the ammo.

Is there more than one kind?
I don't mean like the difference between HP and FMJ, but like one rifle will shoot this .17, another rifle will only shoot this other kind.

What is the labeling difference?

Thanks

dave

There's the rimfires.............17 Mach II, .17 HMR, .17 Supermag

centerfire...........17 Rem, .17 Hornet, and a slew of wildcats. None of them are interchangeable.

thanks. It is mainly the rimfires that I'm curious about.

Is this something like the battle between VHS and Beta for marketing dominance? or are there real differences between the 17 Mach II and the 17 HMR. I'm assuming that the supermag is sort of like the 22 mag vs the 22 LR.

The Mach 2 is a .22lr necked down, the HMR is a .22 Mag necked down and the Supermag is based off of a nail gun cartridge and is speedier than the HMR.
