Is 17hmr good/long lived enough to be worth investing into? I recently bought a Bergara BMR in .22lr and fell in love with it. Bergara also make the same rifle in 17hmr. I would use the rifle for varmit/range.

I was thinking of buying a Bergara BMR in 17hmr or a Bergara b14 in 223wylde. I already have a lot of 223/556 so I’m trying to decide if adding a new ammo type is worth it.

How does the 22mag do in the 200yard range? It would be be smarter to just go 223 and not worry about it?
I’ll have to be honest and say I’ve not done any 200 yard shooting with either caliber.
A .223 will certainly be flatter and have more punch at 200 yards if that is any help.

I picked up a new CZ 457 Lux during the scamdemic in .17 HMR because every time I went to see what (if any) ammo was available near me, pretty much everything was gone except there were boxes and boxes of .17 HMR. It was a long time until I started seeing .22 LR or .22 WMR coming back after that, but .17 HMR was always around. Something to consider for scamdemic II or ammogeddon II.

I don't think the 17HMR is going away any time soon. Although the 22 mag carries a heavier bullet, the 17 is hell for velocity and shoots very flat.

I picked up an Alexander Arms 17hmr AR upper several years ago, and I liked it so much I bought a second one. I stocked up on ammo when it was still cheap and probably have enough that my kids and grandkids will be shooting it well after I’m gone. I’ve killed a bunch of stuff with my 17’s from crows to wild pigs, but like like Dennis, I’d prefer a 22 magnum with heavier bullets. However at this point, I’m too heavily vested in the 17’s, and though I’m not necessarily an AR guy, I like the 17 on that platform and don’t think there’s a quality AR alternative in 22 magnum.

In Oklahoma's wind the 17HMR can let one down. Just a bit of wind too. I like the 22WMR. Zero's at 100 yds. And it has just the right report.
