I received the following report from my 9 year old daughter today after they discussed the 3 branches of government and their functions:
Daughter: Isn't the president supposed to enforce our laws?
Teacher: Yes.
Daughter: Then why is the president making laws about guns?
Teacher: We really don't want to discuss guns, but he is making laws because he thinks it will help keep people safe.
Daughter: But that isn't his job is it?
Teacher: Keeping people safe?
Daughter: No. Making laws.
Teacher: Well, he has the power of executive orders.
Daughter: Isn't that the same as making laws?
Teacher: Somewhat, yes.
Daughter: Isn't that Congress' job?
Teacher: Well, yes.
Daughter: Doesn't the president have to obey the rules too?
Teacher: Of course.
Daughter: Then why doesn't he obey the 2nd amendment?
Teacher: We really don't want to talk about guns here.
Daughter: How did we fight the British in the Revolutionary War?
Teacher: We really need to move on.
Needless to say, Dad was pretty proud.
In fairness to the teacher, she is not a liberal and not anti-gun but I did find the whole issue very interesting from my daughter's point of view and was impressed with her ability to analyze a current legal topic as it applied to her current area of study.
Funny how getting a 15-22 for Christmas will get a child politically inclined.......
