I received the following report from my 9 year old daughter today after they discussed the 3 branches of government and their functions:

Daughter: Isn't the president supposed to enforce our laws?

Teacher: Yes.

Daughter: Then why is the president making laws about guns?

Teacher: We really don't want to discuss guns, but he is making laws because he thinks it will help keep people safe.

Daughter: But that isn't his job is it?

Teacher: Keeping people safe?

Daughter: No. Making laws.

Teacher: Well, he has the power of executive orders.

Daughter: Isn't that the same as making laws?

Teacher: Somewhat, yes.

Daughter: Isn't that Congress' job?

Teacher: Well, yes.

Daughter: Doesn't the president have to obey the rules too?

Teacher: Of course.

Daughter: Then why doesn't he obey the 2nd amendment?

Teacher: We really don't want to talk about guns here.

Daughter: How did we fight the British in the Revolutionary War?

Teacher: We really need to move on.

Needless to say, Dad was pretty proud.:patriot:

In fairness to the teacher, she is not a liberal and not anti-gun but I did find the whole issue very interesting from my daughter's point of view and was impressed with her ability to analyze a current legal topic as it applied to her current area of study.

Funny how getting a 15-22 for Christmas will get a child politically inclined.......:rollingla

When I was teaching high school math, I had a student complaining about the "rich" people not paying their fair share of taxes. So, I pulled up the current income tax rates and did a lesson on piecewise functions and how the income tax brackets worked into that. Sadly, the aforementioned student had no clue that the income tax structure was set up like that. More sad, was that even afterwards she still thought that "rich" folks were paying less income taxes than poor people.

For the most part the schools do not want educated students...or educated teachers.
